Something about Post-Production

Hi!

I have a question concerning post-production. Is the color correction dependent on the lighting itself? (I mean, if its bright and clear, is it easier to control color correction then filming under a regular light bulb, for instance?)

Not really, although color grading can correct overall color temp of the lights to an extent.

What you need are good exposure (being mindful of highlights and shadows), good lighting ratios, and shooting with the right color balance all help to get a good grading session in post.

Define easier....

The color temperature of a light bulb versus sunlight versus florescents, etc. are all different. Some create everything kinda orange, others kinda blue. WHITE BALANCE while shooting solves this, but you can correct it in post.

Color correction is an art, fixing white balance is easy. So it depends on what you want to do with the overall color of a shot determines how difficult it will be. Yes, it helps to have a well exposed shot before messing with all the color.

so whats important is that there are less shadows and more highlights? And what does it take to determine good lighting ratios and balance? :) Thanks

What I mean is making sure you have detail in shadows and aren't clipping the highlights. The goal is to preserve as much information as possible before going into post so that you have more to work with.

Ratios between key light and fill is also an art form, and depends greatly on the look you want and the mood you're creating.

I highly recommend a good cinema lighting book.

Having been an editor for so long, I lean heavily on post and knowing exactly what I can do in post, it's easy to lean on that and shoot accordingly. I treat every frame of every shot to a point I don't even call it color correction. To me, it's color creativity.
That said, I light until I can get exactly what I want in post... if I light at all.
