software question

I'm looking for some free (ideally) software that I can use to create a simple split screen effect. Something like the Mike Oldfield In Dulci Jubilo video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCvz7uflMIU&noredirect=1

I know this doesn't answer your question, but if you are serious about film making perhaps look into paid programs which offer these effects and more in a simple way. Many have student options to make it much cheaper
