Sennheiser MKH 50 vs Oktava Joly Mod using Fostex FR2 High quality

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVduSCTjDEg

This is a higher quality test then my last one..

This is a comparison between the Sennheiser MKH 50 and the Oktava MK-012 Micahel Joly Mod microphone.

Recorded with the Fostex FR2 in 48 khz in 24 bit.

Oade brothers Super Mod on the Fostex.

The mics about 12 inches away. The Oktava had about 15 percent more gain to better match them.

I just posted this up because I was looking for these when I was trying to decide. I ended up getting both. I hope this helps anyone out there trying to decide.

Just a note. Off axis and handling noise s better with the Sennheiser.

But with proper technique and a good operator see if you can tell the difference yourself.

To be honest, I am not very impressed.

The self-noise generated by the mic you are putting up against the MKH 50 was a dead give-away.

IMHO, I think the money saved by going with the mic you listed as a substitute for the MKH 50 will almost immediately get spent towards a noise-reduction plug-in.

In my experience, going for the better quality equipment in the first place saves much time later on. The MKH-50 self-noise is amazing and if you can afford it, go for it! If you can't, save up for it! Mics will last more than 25 years if treated correctly.

The test was for people that don't have the money for a Sennheiser or Schoeps. There are other alternatives like the AKG CK93 blueline, The busman Hypercardioid etc..

I am with you on buy the best mic you can afford.

I started with the Oktava MK-012.. Moved to an AKG blueline.

But always wanting better audio I finally got a Sennheiser MKH 50, MKH 60, Neumann, KM185, Neumann KMR 81i and 82i.

Also this test is comparing a $200 microphone to one that costs about $1,200.

It is always a trade off on what you can afford.

I can tell the difference between the mics instantly. But most people can not..

So it is just a test for people that are considering a low end mic due to lack of funds.

I think the Oktava for the money is one of the best deals out there.. If you know of any better in the price range.. Please post it so others can benefit as well.

I also think the Joly mod is a must since you can get it for $99 and it really improves the microphone dramatically.

Michael does good work, but a 012 is not a shotgun. Even with a hyper-cardioid capsule on it, it still does not give you enough side cancellation/rejection like you would get with the 50. I would always choose a shotgun over a regular pencil mic, if you are going to be in anything but a highly sound-controlled environment.

Something to consider. I loved my MKH 60 and 80. But.....Rode's NTg-2 ain't that bad, a touch bright, but very usable. Even Azden has a relatively inexpensive shotgun that's actually decent.

I love some of Joly's mods for studio mics, though. Especially the 319 mods.

I think it's usually the talent behind the mic and not the mic itself. I know of at least one indiefilm that used the ME66 Seinheiser, and the sound was good.

So, have you actually used the ME66? Was it with the K6 or K6T capsule? Can you tell us why has the ME66 fallen out of favor? What type of boom did you use and what length was it? How many hours of booming experience do you have?

I think it's time, Harmonica, that you put up or shut up. Post one of your projects, let us see your work, and include a few behind the scenes shots including your gear.
