Script Re-Writes

There is no fixed number. As many as it takes. But at some point, you need to step away from it and declare it done. Everytime I read something I write, I can see ways to make it different. But different isn't always better. So I'll change it, not like it, change it again and just keep writing until it works.

I rewrote a short script (by short I mean less than 10 pages) 8 times before I was finally satisfied with the execution. I have an entire box of paper from my first feature-length script representing about 10 different drafts that I had printed and marked up. I have about 40 pages of notes and mini-scenes from the feature I'm currently writing, but only about 5 pages of finished script, and I may change it again because I've brainstormed a different opening.

Easier? Writing isn't easy. Get used to it. :)

Yow! Staggering, but sounds accurate. Gotta let the mind wander to greener pastures.... as long as there's a bell on it. ;)

The last of those probably based on a table read.

This is huge. Post reading discussions with the right group of mindful people and fellow collaborators is priceless.

The script is written, then rewritten, then tweaked for production, then rewritten during the shoot, then rewritten in the edit, then rewritten after viewing the rough cut, then the "final cut" is what everyone perceives as what was originally written.

The snake that eats its tail.

Somewhere between 1 and 100.

Seriously though, some people are happy with their third version, some never will be.

As a sidenote, make sure you ask for the opinion of other screenwriters. They'll ALWAYS find something to edit.

I have a scenario in my story in which the main characters change roles, I have 5 different events which cause this change so I'm going to do a script for each of the different scenarios and then work with whichever one feels like the better story.

My last feature script had 16 re-writes.

It's my understanding that Peter Shaffer re-wrote Amadeus over thirty times.
