Screen Adaptation?

Hi everyone, I'm a student studying scriptwriting and unfortunately inbetween all the creative stuff we also have to write an "academic" essay! I'm writing it on literary adaptation and how you go from book to film!
If anyone here has had any experience with their own screen adaptation and how you go about getting the rights/permission, I would really like to ask you some questions!

I've done it with a short story before. The book the story was published in was out of print so that made it easy to get the rights. The author didn't care about it being made into a film but he had to talk to the publishers.

I'm possibly about to start adaptation of another short story but it is an unpublished story by my friend, so permission has already been granted. Though we haven't signed anything yet, I'm still deciding if I want to go through with it
