Schooling?

Ok, ya I'm new to the forum but I have all these questions...
Anyway, to get a job in the film industry how much schooling would one need. AA, BA, MA? any at all? I'm
sure it depends on the type of job I'm looking for, but lets just say Director/Producer area. I do have a BA (History), dont think thats much help though. Just like anything else, I understand there are 100's of paths that would get you to the "door", but what do you need once you get there?

Experience.

I'm a film student, and to be honest, I doubt that the degree itself is going to help me out one iota. I suppose I've made some contacts that may be important down the line, but the most meaningful learning I've found through trial and error.

But what do I know? I'm pretty much starting out, so it may not be my place to say. That said, when an employer looks at your resume and portfolio, they're more likely to take notice of how many film festivals you've been screened at, how many films you've worked on, etc. rather than what film school you went to. I know tons of students that have finished their degrees and can now write theoretical academic papers about film in their sleep, but very little hands-on experience.

Start shooting now, everybody has to start somewhere. Keep working on it and get as much under your belt as possible.

Film school is not going to hurt you, but don't depend on your classes and your degree to get you where you want to go. Develop friendships with people with various skills and make your own projects after hours. The contacts and relationships you make will be invaluable later.

Actually a BA in history is a pretty good education to have to go into filmmaking.. think of all the historical topics you already know about that you can draw from :D

Thanks for the info. I figured the more your stuff gets out there the better your chances are.
Reel what school? UA? just curious...
