Schooling options

Hey guys, I have made up my mind on what I want to do after high school. I want to be a film/video editor. I just am wondering what the best schools in the west coast for learning this. Film school? Private institute? University? And also any tips on becoming successful in this field? THANKS!

Besides the huge no school/school debate that is constantly going on, first thing is first, where are you from? I was enrolled at Vancouver Film School (www.vfs.com) but sadly I couldn't make it due to a lack of funds. I have toured it 3 times and still want to go. Sadly it is not within my financial means. Instead I am trying my hardest indie style and it seems to be working fairly well.

As far as VFS goes check out their website, a lot of talent comes out of there. Including Niel Blompcamp and many other people who worked on District 9.

Hope this helps.

Cheers.

Best tip i can give you for "in the field" would be internship. You've got to work for nothing (in most cases) in order to make it. As far as schools (for the field of editing at leats) its best to go to a school. Anything on the west coast is good. I worked as an editor for two years after college, and that was normal college...(but then I quit and started working films in the art department. Sitting at an editing station for 12 hours a day finally got to me :) ) Seriously, do some research, tour campuses, find the one that intersts you the most (and you can afford). Check out Fullsail college...I think they have a campus in the west. Its expensive, but highly intense and short (2 year degree). I have friends who went there, and got jobs right after. Maybe a fluke, but definately worth a shot.
