SAG Question

At the SAG Indie website, it APPEARS that I can use a SAG actor for free for a short film under 35 minutes and under $50,000. If I'm reading the contract/application correctly, these criteria must be met, plus the application must be submitted a month before the shoot.

Can a SAG actor or someone who knows confirm this? I understand that the actor must agree to do the film as well, and they must be fed and reimbursed for travel and other stuff. Is there anything else I need to know? I am thinking about asking a semi famous actress friend to act in a short for me and I don't want to run into problems with the law or SAG, and I certainly don't want any actors to get in trouble because I misunderstand the long ass contract.

I too am dealing with SAG right now. Contact your local SAG/AFTRA office. They really are there to help. Do it sooner rather than later, as getting calls returned can be a hassle. It's taken me a week to get a return call (and that's with me calling every other day). We're using a different agreement, so I can't speak to the specifics of the agreement you want.

Make certain you have every question you need answered written out so that you can ask them all in one call. They don't like lots of calls on the same agreement. Take detailed notes and ask for the rep to send you everything (agreements, etc.) via email. They will likely shoot you the basic stuff you need via email anyway so you'll have an address.

I am working with the Chicago office. The SAGindie site gives the numbers of the regional offices.

Good luck!
