RIP Richard Kiel

He's actually the earliest memory I have of watching a film. Sitting in the back of my parents station wagon at a drive-in screening of Moonraker at around age 5. I didn't really take in much of the film, but the scene with Jaws biting Bond's heel while skydiving always stuck in my mind, and for years after I thought that the movie I'd seen was called 'Jaws'.

I read his autobiography, "Making It BIG In The Movies." It was surprisingly good. The guy was in so many shows - TWILIGHT ZONE, GILLIGAN'S ISLAND, I DREAM OF JEANNIE, WILD WILD WEST, etc. Even though he got many roles, the guy struggled to make a living and had to rely on being a salesman (cars, houses) to be successful. The book is a very interesting look at Hollywood, especially as Kiel pulls no punches talking about the industry and the people in it.

Most of the old bond movies are way too campy for my taste.
But I really enjoyed him in Happy Gilmore

For such a huge guy I'd say he lived a really long time!
