Reel Question

I'm currently trying to land a job as a videographer and editor. Would it be better to make two separate short reels (one being the videography reel, the other the editing reel) or to combine them into one 5 minute reel? Any tips would be immensely appreciated. Thank you!

Both. Make one short -- maybe a minute and a half, another one maybe 5 minutes to send to people who ask to see more. Get all your good stuff in that first 30 seconds.

GuerillaAngel: Just to clarify: Are you saying that I should send what I have right now (it's a few brief clips from videography gigs) and then say "5 minute reel available upon request" (and keep the other stuff--like my movie stuff--on that longer reel?)

Your first 30 seconds should wow them with your both your camera AND editing skills. Is your current reel that good? If so, use that and yes, mention you have a longer reel.

If someone calls you up and ASK to see your reel, you probably can send both, noting which one they ought to see first. But if you're using your reel as a PR tool, you're better off wowing them and leaving them wanting more. The idea is to get them to start a dialogue with you so you can sell yourself.

Good luck!

I personally think you should have seperate reels, unless you're going for a job as a camera/editor.

If you send your 'standard reel 'off for every job, how does the person emplying you know what is your editing and what is your videography?

You may have edited something shot by an amazing cinematographer on 35mm film with a $1mil budget. You stick that on your reel as some example shots that from a film you've edited, and you may find yourself in a bit of a situation when the potential client says 'i want that' and you have to either make it like that for them, or have to explain that in fact you only edited that and don't know how to make the cinematography look like that.

If you're going to combine, at least make sure the vision is only stuff you've shot and you can show off your editing prowess with the cutting of it.
