I'm not a filmmaker per se, but I need advice from people who have worked with public television, and I figure a forum of independent filmmakers would be a place where some people might have that experience.
I have a concept that I think would interest a public broadcaster that centers on unscripted live web video. While there are potential applications for digital subchannels (channel X.2 or Y.3, etc.) and a magazine show, the initial project would be entirely online.
I'm wondering, if I pitch this concept to a public broadcaster and they're interested, what should I expect? Will they help in securing grants from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and charitable foundations? Do they have money for funding themselves? Will they work to find corporate underwriting support? And what sort of rights will they demand? Will they want to own the website? Will I ever be able to take the concept independent again? How does it work when you get a single-episode production commissioned for an existing public television franchise like Frontline, Nature or NOVA?
Thanks!
