cinematography Pricey Camera Rigs

A lot of us here shoot primarily on DSLRs, and shooting strait from them leads to shaky footage, and many other problems.
So, their option is to invest in a camera rig to make it smoother to handle hand held shots.
Red Rock is the most popular brand for rigs, but frankly, I don't see why anyone would want to pay thousands of dollars for some plastic. Yes.. Maybe it has a lifetime warranty, but seriously?
What do you guys think? I know it sounds way to under budget... but why not try some DIY rigs, they might not last nearly as long, but if they break, you make another one. You know what im saying?
What is your perspective?

DIY has it's place, but it becomes less reasonable to use the higher you go on the filmmaking food chain.

If I'm shooting with 3 of my friends and the rig breaks, "Damn it, I'll fix it, and we'll try again tomorrow".

If I'm shooting at a location I'm paying for, with crew I am paying, with actors I am paying, and the rig breaks, I just lost a LOT more money than it would have cost to get something that wasn't likely to break in the first place.

I made a pretty decent rig out of PVC and a quick release plate to mount the camera. It works pretty well :D well I didn't find a better way of putting on the plate yet... (Using tape, but it holds extremely well LOL)

There's nothing wrong with DIY if you do it right :D
