Preparing to film first short

Hey guys, just new here, and I'm pretty new to the working behind the camera business. I've always wanted to be involved in filmmaking, and recently after a lot of saving went out and bought a Canon XHA1 camera. I've got Sony Vegas 8 editing software and After Effects for post production, but I'm wanting some advice on adequate external microphones to film with. Also lighting aswell. I don't have much of a budget due to the price of the camera so anything not too expensive. Thanks.

The Rode NTG-2 is currently the popular choice for a budget shotgun for outdoor usage at about $270 for the basic kit without the boompole.

You should also very seriously consider a hyper-cardioid condenser mic for indoor usage, something like the Oktava MK-012 ($275).
