Last week and a couple of other times my PMD 661 would not turn on. Even with new batteries in it.
AFter searching the web for answers all I got was forums asking about the same thing.
I came to the solution when I called the tech company up and thought I would share.
If your PMD isn't turning on, chances are the Firmware is out of date, yeah, they don't mention that at all. The one that comes with the system is the 2008 version. the newer one fixes the not turning on problem, it is easy to up date and cost nothing.
