Please help

My mom knows that I want to be a Filmmaker, and thought it would be nice to get me a camcorder for Christmas. She was so excited for me that she let the cat out of the bag a little early and let me inspect it. Although it being MiniDV, it doesn't have an audio input. Does anyone know if there are any digital external audio recorders and if so where could I get one for cheap?

First of all, there may well be an audio input -- on some models the mini-jack o/p doubles up as an audio i/p -- you'd have to check the manual to find out.

If not, the best, cheap option is a mini-disc recorder. Mini-disc is a pretty good format, very reliable -- and as it didn't really catch on with the public, the recorders are now available for next to nothing.

The only thing you'll need to remember is this: because you are recording the sound separately, you'll need to slate all of your shots, just as you would have for film.

If you don't slate (at least do a hand clap in front of the camera), you will spend wasteless hours syncing everything. Which gets old very fast.

And props for realizing a mic on the camera isn't going to cut it...
