On The Set Audio

I'd be concerned with rf interference with the wireless ear bud. Is it the wireless, is it the recording? Also, the Tascam DR-100 has been getting better reviews in comparison. Just my two cents.

Okay, in this same post, how does the H4N compare to the more expensive R24 multitrack recorder? Is it worth the extra bucks?

I mostly commented out of concern about the wireless earbud because of years of experience in television news using wireless mics and IFB's and being somewhat familiar with the problems they bring to the table. I was just trying to help. Message received.

So all of your actors will be wearing a mic in front of their mouth? I guess that would work if your film is about operators in a call center... :D You're not going to get decent, reliable wireless sets for less than $600 each; that's a fact of audio life. Yes, you can definitely get cheaper stuff, but you will have to deal with drop outs, RF interference, added noise and other fun artifacts.

I just don't like the Zoom H4n; its build is flimsy, it eats batteries like crazy and the mic preamps are very brittle sounding. The build of the Tascam DR-100 is much more solid, Tascam has experience with production sound gear and the preamps are much smoother. Oade Brothers even offers a mod for $125.

The R-24 is for musicians; it would be very hard to put in a bag and operate it while doing run and gun. And if you're willing to spend $500 spend another $80 and get the Marantz PMD-661 - smooth mic pres, good interfacing, etc. Get a fully modded unit from Oade for $680.

Com'on MDM, you know what I'm going to say even before you ask the questions!

One B&H customer trashed the Zoom H4N for video recorders because the 2 inputs are "slaved together."

Thanks for the feedback Alcove Audio. I am on a tight budget. So, I want to buy the right equipment my first time round this time.

How about this kit from B&H?

I need a decent pair of headphones and for the same $500, this includes a pair with the Tascam DR-100.

GREAT!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you, Alcove Audio.

I expect to order the recorder and headphones tonight. I'll have to hold off on the mic & boom kit until I can get more funds.

Are the 4 built-in mics of the Tascam DR-100 good enough for any type of indoor recordings? Or, do I need the shotgun for everything indoors?

In a funny story I bought those headphones a while back and when I got them out of that box I realized that I didn't have the right size mini jack (or whatever its called) sticking in my audio recorder. I ordered an adaptor off eBay but, twice, it never came and last week I got a refund.

Just clicked that link and saw my headphones there and realized that all I needed to do was unscrew the big mini jack thing and, hey presto, I had the right size one. I have officially wast those headphones for two months now.

So thank you to Alcove and MDMP for opening my eyes to what an idiot I've been and ensuring that I'm not wasting a decent set of headphones any longer!
