NTG1 and NTG2

realize that I have been asking a bunch of noob questions, Here is another one. What is the difference between the NTG1 and NTG2. By that I mean for blimps. I see a blimp for sale that says it is compatible with the NTG-1 but saying nothing about using it for the NTG2 or NTG 3 for that matter. Does this matter at all?

Blimps/Zeppelins come in various sizes. The length of the shotgun mic is the determining factor.

The NTG-1 is 8.5 inches (roughly) and the NTG-2 is almost 11 inches. The NTG-3 is 10 inches. You need some room for the mic to "breathe" inside the blimp. The NTG-1 will be fine in a "larger" blimp (you push it a little forward in the shock-mount), but the NTG-2 (and possibly the NTG-3) may be a little cramped inside a zeppelin made for smaller shotguns.

As long as you have the same amount of distance from the front of the blimp equal to the radius of the blimp you should be okay. Example - Diameter = 5 inches, so the radius is 2.5 inches therefore 2.5 inches of air space in front of the mic is needed.

Remember that you will need space behind the mic as well so it does not rub, bump, etc. and make noise. Most XLR connectors will add about 3+ inches.

Keep in mind that you may want to upgrade your shotgun in the future. Rycote has many different blimps; pricey, though.
