New to Contracts and Release forms

Hey, I'm in Pre Production of an Australian Indie Feature called "Man vs. Car". It's the first feature film I've produced (I've been very active with short films in the past), and that said I am very new to working with proper contracts and release forms. I've heard of a book called 'Contracts for the Film and Television Industry' by Mark Litwack and wanted to know of any feedback of the book from anyone that has used it. Is it well worth the cash?

Don't forget crew releases that sign over copyrights to you. A lot of crew people, such as art department, DP, etc contribute "art" to the look of the movie that you should have transferred to you in writing.

Here's a really great book that shows you how to understand and draft contracts to your needs, without using templates that may not be right for your situation: "The Pocket Lawyer for Filmmakers" by Thomas A. Crowell.

Has sections on each part of a contract and explains why you need them. Also a glossary and examples of situations, but no samples of contracts to copy and edit because the author feels it's better to understand what goes into a contract and know what to look for. You can write your own, and take to an attorney to review. I have written several contracts using his book as a guide and found it quite helpful. It's time-consuming but teaches you a huge amount. Throughout the book, he points out certain things you really need to watch out for.
