editing need to clone character but wondering how i'd pull this off.

ok so i know basically use a tripod have the characters act out the parts then mask and what not, thing is id like to have the camera handheld and also is there any way around masking? i was thinking green screen but would the lighting look off? the scenes that ill need multiple of the same person will be outside probably sunny as well. i wil need to clone multiple zombies, when i say multiple i mean at least 8, any ideas? and yes they will probably over lap eachother in some shots.

Okay, so I had to google "masking". As far as I can tell, that's just FCP terminology for split-screen. You really can't do split-screen with handheld. You also can't have the clones move in front of each other.

To do that, you'll either have to rotoscope or green-screen (or a combination of both). Yeah, you can go handheld, but I think you'll probably be biting off more than you can chew. I think you'd be much better off keeping the tripod locked down. I also think you'd be better off doing as little rotoscoping as possible. Green-screen EVERYTHING; you might only need to rotoscope the zombie's feet and ankles.

what cracker said...

green screen, and tripod... you don't want to mess with it otherwise... unless you are a god in aftereffects...

Okay, wait -- so "masking" is the same as "rotoscoping"? Well then, yeah, you can have your characters cross in front of each other, but it's ridiculously time-consuming.

Regardless, the camera should be locked down.

ok yeah i just wanted it moving so there arent a lot of tripod shots, but will the lighting look wrong on the green screened zombies? or will it be fine since im shooting in the bright day?

It's hard to just clone somebody. Using the tripod for cloning effects is a LUXURY compared to going hand held. If you don't want to do the masking, then go for a green screen or portable green screen. Be careful though because in long shoots, the sun and the clouds change the lighting.

Also if you wanted to go hand held for some shots, you can have another actor with the same clothes/hairstyle/makeup etc. and shoot him from the back where you can't see his face.
