Music Video

Hello everyone,

I have to make a music video for filmclass, but haven't got the slightest clue where to start. I picked a song, but don't know how to continue. Any advice?

Decide what you want to portray in the music video. If you watch various music videos you will see that some (most) have a mixture of 'band singing/playing' footage and a separate story to help convey the message or mood of that song.

Your first step is to come up with the message that you want your video to express. What does your song convey? Once you have that determined then you can start planning out how you will get that across visually.

For example, say you have selected a country song. The song is about young love and infatuation. What do you see in your mind when you listen to this song? It may be of two young people madly in love who are enjoying being youthful while they sit on a truck-bed gazing at the stars, holding each other in their arms, etc. It may be a montage of them just being together running through the praire fields, making out in a pile of hay, etc. I dunno, this is just an example. haha

Once you have that, you just cast and go out and film it!

If you want a mixture of band members singing the song then you just film them and cut it into the music video.

Sorry if this is confusing, I wrote it in a hurry.

Hope this helps!

Well, there are plenty of 'musicvideo-genres' where you can choose from:

- tell a story: like Meat Loaf's I'd do anything for love:

Or Sigur Ros 'Glosoli'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zr_MJAOyOeU

Or Rammstein 'Sonne'

- do a performance video: the band performs 'live'
Europe:

Treble: (I assisted on set with this one, lol)

- do a mix of storytelling and performance: Guns N' Roses' November Rain of Badly Drawn Boy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SbUC-UaAxE

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTW4Ltkv2os

- do a mix of different settings/designs with the singer: like Rihanna's Umbrella
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvBfHwUxHIk

- do a libdub
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWpuQxLXDrE

- do crazy stuff and effects, just like The Gossip or MGMT
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opWBRRCTDXg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2qji7GReDE

- make it conceptual like this (in)famous Dutch video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cWL89fjfUU

Or Ulver's 'Dressed in Black'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFdcf_XUAKM

- Check out Micheal Gondry (he did a lot of different things).

So, as you can see, there are no restrictions.
You just need an idea.
You can try to:
- visualise the lyrics
- interpret the lyrics to tell a story
- choose a certain style/trick/gimmick
- throw a party (do the performance thing)
- do something crazy, incredible, wonderful, exciting
- combine any of the above ;-)

PS.
Waar studeer je?

@DeJager - Thanks for the reply. As a matter of fact, I did select a country song haha. I'll brainstorm a bit on the message in te morning.

@WalterB - Thanks for the reply to you too haha. It's nice to see another Dutch person here (assuming you are Dutch and not only living in Rotterdam). I'll check out the links in the morning.
