cinematography Moving Car

We have a dialogue driven car sequence, and it would suck to shoot from the back seat forward. So, my DP has a suction cup car mount, that made me as nervous as could be.

The most incredible thing I found out was (this might just be the case with this camera), we were traveling at about 20 miles an hour, and the scenery was flying by. He had to do 10 mph for you to distinguish the background.

Is that normal?

Oh man, we're going along a block and the camera fell. The DP just caught it as it was about the splat. Just then a group of kids pass by and yell "What ya doing? This reality TV?" Then they made a U turn and followed us as they were screaming out the windows "I wanna be on TV"

A good time was had by all.

The thing with the background is as much to do with angles as it is speed*. If the camera is perpendicular to the axis the car is travelling along then the background will be an indistinguishable blur - change to 45° or so and it will look a lot clearer. You can experiment without a camera; try looking out the window of a moving vehicle, and see how much more of the background you can make out when you're at less of an angle to it.

* The distance from the background is equally important, but a more obvious factor.

Sounds like good fun, if a little risky, anyway!
