movie soundtracks !

Hi, just joined this site after a quick google of film-forum sites, and stumbled across this one....and.... well here I am :)

Just a quick run down about why im here, Im no film "buff", more into the music scene, you name it, I most probaly like it and got it.

Last night I watched for the 2nd time "Collateral" starring Jamie Foxx, Tom Cruise e.t.c.
Now although I liked the film, it was the music during the film I realy appreciated, The Roots, Groove Armaded, Miles Davis e.t.c.
In any film the style of music, the scene its played realy gives the right mood and sets the scene off.

What I was wondering who's job is it to choose the music for such run-of-the-mill films that have such a random soundtrack.
I.E. Collateral, Pulp Fiction, Leon, Blade.........non-musicals.

Sorry for such a wild stab in the dark question, many thanks.......
p.s Hope this is in the right forum, let alone the web site:huh:

Welcome!

That job is done by the music coordinator. Seemingly random and
run-of-the-mill, the choice of songs takes a long time and a lot of
work. Many songs are selected and chosen and discussed by the
director, composer and producers. Often the songs are chosen before
the scenes are shot, many times they are decided upon after the
scene is cut.

Finding the right song for the mood and finding the right available
song is a very difficult job and a good music coordinator can make
a lot of money. The more they know about the legal aspects, the
more they have relationships with publishers and artists, the more
valuable they are.

Also, songs are usually relatively expensive, so a lot of negotiation has to take place on the music supervisors part.

BTW: I think the correct job title is music supervisor, I may be wrong though
