Mill Valley Film Festival Call for Entries begins April 1, 2005
Known as a filmmakers festival, the annual Mill Valley Film Festival offers a high-profile, prestigious, non-competitive environment perfect for celebrating the best independent and international cinema. Presented by the California Film Institute, the 28th Festival runs October 6 – 16, 2005 at the CinéArts Sequoia Theatre and 142 Throckmorton Theatre (Mill Valley) and at the Christopher B. Smith Rafael Film Center (San Rafael). Entry forms are available on line at www.mvff.com and www.withoutabox.com. Early deadline is April 30; regular deadline is May 31; and final deadline is June 30.
Sections at the Festival include the Official Premiere Selection, World Cinema, US Cinema, Valley of the Docs, Children’s FilmFest, 5@5 (daily shorts programs) and V(ision)Fest (programs embracing cutting-edge filmmaking and technologies). Founded in 1978 by MVFF Director Mark Fishkin, the Festival has established an impressive track record for launching new films and the careers of new filmmakers with an emphasis on films that have not yet secured US distribution. The eleven-day festival sells approximately 40,000 tickets, and welcomes over 200 filmmakers from around the world.
As the only prominent fall film festival in the San Francisco Bay Area, the Mill Valley Film Festival is an important industry resource for fall launches, preview screenings of upcoming theatrical releases, and Bay Area Academy Awards campaigns. The Bay Area continues to be a significant market for independent and international film, and the Mill Valley Film Festival consistently provides a forum for introducing new films to west coast audiences (e.g. MVFF 2004 included screenings of Vera Drake with Mike Leigh and Imelda Staunton in attendance).
