Mic Needed

Sorry if this is in the wrong board.

I need to re-film the boat scenes we shot a few months ago (when the ocean stole my camera) and the sound recording device and mic I used are no longer available. I had rented an edirol system and a shotgun mic with a wind protector.

However, like I said this is not available so I need something else. I have a new camera, another Sony Handycam, and it has a normal mic port. As in, a standard mic you'd plug into your computer. I was hoping if there were any mics available that would plug into this but also avoid wind. My previous one went down into the ocean as well but I know it wasn't very good at protecting against the wind. I'm really desperate here now, as we should be filming in a matter of weeks.

The Fostex FR-2LE and the Marantz PMD-600 are very nice budget field recorders. A lot of people will recommend the Zoom; I find the mic pres very noisy, but not bad if used with with a separate mixer into the audio ins. However, if you are going to buy a mixer of any decent quality and plug it into the Zoom you may as well get the Fostex or the Marantz.

Wind protection can get very pricey. Foam windscreens are cheap and don't do well in even moderate wind; $20 - $100. Windjammers and softie kits work okay in moderate wind; $75 - $200. Blimps/Zeppelins with windjammer coverings do the best job; up to about $750.

I've checked those two recorders out and they're a bit above my price range. They're similar to the edirol system I used too.

Is there a mic available (with a wind blocker) that plugs into a normal computer mic port? My camera has a mic input like this.

Wind protection is separate from the mic, and I have listed the options above.

I'm assuming that your camera or computer has a 1/8" minipin connection. You will need an impedance matcher/adapter like this:

Your mic MUST supply its own phantom power via battery if you use a simple impedance matcher/adapter. Many mics do not have that option.

That connected would work - but like you said I'd need to find a mic that has it's own phantom power.

I know this sounds stupid, but I'm using a Dicapac underwater pack thing (for obvious reasons) and I believe it could block the wind itself. I tested it and got the usual wind sounds and the dialogue of the person, but none of the horrible over-powering sound from the wind when it hits the mic. Do you think this option could work?
