Merlin Steadicam issues

It's a fantastic little device and gets me shots which would otherwise be impossible.

However, I have a few issues shooting outside. England being what it is, is often blustery which plays havoc with the Merlin outdoors. So a couple of questions.

Firstly, does anyone have any tips on using a Merlin outside on a blowy day.

Secondly, does the vest make any difference?

Thanks in advance...

Have someone walk upwind of the steadicam carrying a windbreaker - use a net rather than a solid flag to avoid creating more turbulence and blocking the operator's view. A 4x4 double would be ideal.

A shorter drop time (i.e. more weight below the gimbal) may also help with stability.

The vest may help (it will certainly allow you to operate for longer) but only if you are accustomed to using it. Steadicam operating is an acquired skill and intense, regular practice (and the instinct that gives you) is absolutely key.
