Mad Men

I know there's a lot to praise about Mad Men. But have you noticed that the lighting (design) of Mad Men is often downright beautiful? Okay, if beautiful is a bit much, then how about effective...as in downright effective? Though, I don't think it is a bit much. At times, at least, it is beautiful. And I'm sure that design is a correct way to describe it. I put it in parentheses because I don't want to suggest that it is somehow or primarily, in any course, only an intellectual exercise or an exercise in abstraction or mechanics, which I suppose it is to start with, but rather to emphasize the results of the lighting which are often and consistently sublime.

Sublime.

Well, I don't recall for sure if this is true for the entire series. But it's certainly true for Season Four which I'm currently watching and just about to finish. Trying to think back, I think it was true of Season Three also. But I'm sure noticing it now.

I want to think that whoever is in charge of lighting --the lighting team on Mad Men-- put it together lovingly and out of love for their craft and for the show. But even if they don't care for the show or they dislike their jobs, even if it's merely a paycheck for them, I would have to say, gee, what consummate professionals they are, what gifted (by the grace of many years of hard work and learning, no doubt) craftsmen...artisans they are.
