cinematography Macro footage: tube or diopter (or both)?

Hello,

I need a macro scene of the sand of a hourglass moving. I took a look on macro lenses but it's very expensive. So I found these alternative techniques.
What's the best option? Can I use an extension tube AND a +8 diopter filter? Or it's too much for this kind of scene?
