Looking for film literature suggestions

Hi, I'm looking for some books/articles/whatever that deal with film in its early years (first 30 yrs) and specifically, audience reception to film as a legitimate form of art or culture. I want to find out more about how early film was viewed in terms of its contribution to pop culture and at what point movies became accepted as legitimate and substantive instead of as mere gimmicks. What was the evolution of film as a mass-media art form? If anyone could point me in the direction of a few sources that might help me out here, or anything else you'd suggest, I'd appreciate it very much. Thank you!

I have this one --

Although it is older, the first chapters do cover the the early cinema days. Admittedly, I have not read the whole book, only parts - but have enjoyed those parts. I'm not sure if this will give you the socialogical perspective you are looking for though. It may be more straight historical. I agree that the socialogical aspect would be more interesting, and I hope you get some other suggestions in this thread!
