Looking For A Start

Hi All. To begin with I have zero professional film making experience  but I would like to produce my first doc. If you're still reading, thank you. Ha. I have a concept, preliminary funding, a plan for additional financial sourcing and access to the story's subjects. However, I am missing the most important thing, experience. I am looking for advice, a partner/ partners/ mentor, a small crew, you know anything that one might need to bring my concept to screen. Filming would take place in South Florida from November through February. Most crew members would need to be on location some of the time, but not all. The majority of filming would be done at scheduled events with the addition of general shots of the location and interviews. If you would like to hear more please PM me. If you are willing to offer any advice please do so, I can use as much as I can get; provided it comes from a good place, thanks. Thanks and Happy Filming.

Look at a horrible course called the "2 Day Film School". Borrow it if you can. It'll give you a basic outline of what you want to know. It might also give you the confidence to plow on.

You do have 1 things that most people struggle with... the money. That will put you ahead of most film makers.

If you have specific questions, ask here. I'll try to answer as many as I can and I'm sure others will do.

Thank you both for your input. More so, thank you for taking the time to give it. "Sweetie", is the film school that you are referring to one by Dov Simens? His name is plastered anywhere 2 day film school comes up. "QualityHD" thanks, if I need assistance with any screenwrighting aspects your's is the first portfolio I'll read. Thanks again cats. Cheers!!

Yeah that's him, Dov Simens. He's a really quirky sounding guy who yells a lot. He doesn't really do much to teach you about the finer aspects of using a camera or cinematography, but its kind of a well rounded simplistic course that teaches you the minimum (If you watch it, you're going to want to kill me - This is the minimum basics. There really is a lot to learn. About 15 hours here by my count) and that you should just go out there any make something and learn while you're at it.

He even covers financing, budgeting & distribution deal making which is rare to see in courses. The downside if I remember right, its slightly old so he doesn't cover video, only film.

There are heaps of other sources of learning, but some of it depends where you're at and where you want to be and how you see yourself getting there.

Yeah cool. Thanks again. Well I better get on it then, because I just finished a conference call with the mayor, police chief and two community members with quite a bit of influence in the subject town, and each has assured me that I will have the access I need to make this a successful film. To me that sounds like a green light; and green means "go baby, go!!" I think this thing is going to happen. Thats again

I can only screenwrite so in that aspect I can give assistance.

QHD, would you like to give me an example of your writing style? Something you have done already or something new? I'm looking for an introductory monolog to my subject town. If you would like to write up something quick I would be happy to read it and even more so if we end up working together. If you are interested, my subject town is in South Florida. I would love to read a quick monolog intro to a similar kind of town, highlighting the beauty and glamor of the town, which covers up the crime and poverty hidden within. I hope you are interested, it could work out for both of us. Cheers
