Killing the Protagonist

I am writing a new screenplay and tossing around the idea of getting the audience attached to the primary Protagonist only for the Antagonist to kill him unexpectedly near the end of the second act...Leaving the audience clueless as to how the story will end until the Antagonist ends up as the actual Hero.

Are there any good films that have successfully pulled off something similar? I'm sure I've seen one, but I can't think of an example off the top of my head.
 
Awesome, thanks Filmy. Lots of examples in the Wikipedia article are a lot more subtle than I had in mind...
No Country For Old Men
and
Children of Men
are obvious exceptions, I have no idea why I didn't think about them as good examples.
