Indie Filmmaker's Bootcamp...

Learn to make movies by making a movie! The Indie Filmmaker's Bootcamp (IFB), a 9-day, total immersion program in which aspiring filmmakers make a movie, from concept through rough cut under the guidance of working Hollywood professionals, is moving to Del Mar, CA for its second year in San Diego. Sponsored by The American Academy of Arts (A3) and The Winston School, the unique program will take place on a Pacific ocean overlook located minutes from the world-famous Del Mar Racetrack, providing a variety of scenic opportunities for location filming.

Featuring industry professionals from both the studio and independent film worlds, the IFB provides students of all ages hands-on exposure to the five crucial phases of production by allowing them to work alongside key mentors to craft, cast, shoot and edit a quality short film. Among the facets of production covered: producing, story development, script breakdown, production management, budgeting & scheduling, cinematography, sound design & recording, lighting, casting & working with actors, editing, and much more.

Filmmakers scheduled to participate include gaffer Nicholas Berry, producer Stan Foster, assistant director Hope R. Goodwin, writer-director Michael Steven Gregory, director of photography Jim Orr, unit production manager Ross Kallen, editor John Rosenberg, casting director Stanzi Stokes, and others.

Said student Brian Kim of last year's IFB, "I've learned more in a 12-hour shoot than four years in the media program at [a California university]." And from student Rabiah Coon, "It was truly remarkable." Several students were employed on professional shoots immediately following the IFB.

The American Academy of Arts provides programs that offer hands-on, project-based learning with a focus on digital media by bringing in professional filmmakers to mentor students on real-world projects. Its unique approach to education utilizes the latest media technology to facilitate career opportunities in the film and television industry. Programs sponsored by A3 have won numerous awards at the state, national and international levels, most recently receiving recognition for student Television Excellence from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
