In Regards to Reciting Poems in a Film - Need Permission?

So, if a character in a film I am making recites a poem by, say, E.E. Cummings, do we need to get permission in order to use the poem in the film? I am naive when it comes to copyrights and etc., so I just wanted to see how protected this type of creative material is.
