HVX200 Question?

Make sure to connect the cable before turning your camera on, and make sure that your capturing application is set for the same settings you recorded with (ie. HighDef or Standard)
I was having a problem for a while until I realized I was trying to import HD footage into a standard definition project

I'm sure you can do it with imovie or even final cut (I've heard it's been done) but this software offers some nifty tools..

I'm backing up a sec. Are you recording onto miniDV tapes or the P2 card? If miniDV then just use the firewire cable. If the P2 card then the camera comes with plugins for FCP that convert the HVX digital files to MOV files FCP recognizes. This is done on the fly during the transfer from the P2 card to your hard drive. Just stick the P2 card in the PCMIA card slot on your laptop and off you go.

direct connect leads me to believe that it would be without tape or P2 needed.. (though I'd still recommend using a tape or something to have a backup recorded)

P2 is pretty spendy, so I think a lot of people opt to go straight to disk rather than deal with the extra cost involved with the P2 cards.
