How to join a film crew?

So, I figure it would be a good place to start on my quest to be a filmmaker is to join a crew filming near me (I live near Philly). I was told my a teacher (who's also a family friend) that you need credits or something (I think she mentioned a guild) to be able to join one, but didn't explain on how to get them.

Is this true? If so, how do you get credits? Also, do you just ask to join a crew?

You'll probably start out as a runner or PA, and probably unpaid, but it's the best way to get practical experience & make contacts.

Mandy, Craigs List (caution there...), Production Hub, MeetUp.com. I think that you just missed the Philadelphia Film Festival. Look for - and attend! - indie screenings. Local college projects always need cast and crew (being an extra can be fun). Check with the PA film commission. http://www.film.org/Philadelphia/Public/FindaJob.aspx
