archived-videos Home Grown Films montage

Here's an interstitial I made for a local student film fest we threw last week: "Home Grown Films" (22 seconds, 1.9 MB). I like it so I thought I'd just share it. Norman is pretty in autumn. Soon I will be posting the long awaited "Bittersweet" music video...after we do pick ups that is.

I liked what I saw, the turning over of the leaf was awesome... was that done by hand or how many takes was it before you got that scene right?

I thought you were going to go all the way around in the opening scene like one of Beckett's. But it didn't and that seemed to me like it was too much. Like it was an over rotation or something. I know why you did it, leaves in the tree, leaves on the ground but maybe a cut in the middle spaced out by the horizontal rotation of the trees scene?

That's my $.01

Oh yea, why white lines instead of black?

very cool...looks like he took the leaf put it credits side up where he wanted it and let the wind blow it over...then ran the footage backwards.

Sharp eye knightly. That's what I did!

Coot: The white bars are just different and I think it looks better, especially with the compositions in the frame. I used white bars for a demo commercial and I will be replacing that demo with this on my reel, so I wanted to convey the same colors and mood, but with a new piece.

That opening tree is so beautiful in real life. The problem is, the day I shot it there was a car parked next to it. The car uglied up the long shot so I just got close to the tree and panned down to show the yellow leaves on the ground. I actually wanted to put another shot in there of red leaves from a bush where I used to live, but I really just went out and did this one day for like twenty minutes. I figured it wasn't worth the effort to go back out and tape more leaves because the fest was the next day anyway.

Love the leaf flip - nice touch - will be great for a demo reel, if you start out with that piece. I personally felt the opening fans of the leaves/trees were too quick - I think maybe one slow pan instead of a couple quick ones would have been better suited. Usually falling leaves portray a calming feelling - the quick pans of the camera contradict that. Just my two cents - keep up the good work:) I'm going to check out your site and see what else you got.

Nice work. Anything to set you aside and get someone viewing to remember you (fondly) works for me. :)
btw- watched the Mustache Chronicles last week. Some funny stuff there.

Logan L - I checked out your site - some of the video clips wouldn't play for me - but I did watch some of the Mustache Chronicles pieces - I enjoyed the bball clip - it reminded me of Jim Carrey's basketball scene from "Cable Guy." Can't wait for the music video.
