having trouble getting my macbook pro and my HDR-HC5 to work together. Please help!

So. I am new to mac. I got a MacBook pro w/ Final Cut Express. How do I transfer my tapes to my Final Cut? I think I may be missing a special connection wire or something? But I don't know.

camera > firewire > mac.

In final cut, under the file menu, choose "Log and Capture".

From there, the manual has the specifics. The quick and dirty method is to hit capture now and it'll ingest the whole tape...that's a very resource wasteful (specifically hard drive space) way to ingest the tape though. i'd read up on "log clip" and "batch capture".

Do you have the camera connected to your computer with a Firewire (6 pin to 4pin) cable? If not, start with camera off, connect cable, then turn camera on and set it to it's playback mode. If neither your camera or your laptop came with an IEEE-1394 (Firewire) 6 pin to 4 pin cable, you'll have to buy one, or steal one from your neighbor.

Lastly, launch Final Cut Express, which should now detect the camera. Then, proceed as Knightly espoused. Oh, and a word of advice about Knightly; don't ever tell him something can't be done for under $20, because he's likely to spend days proving you wrong. ;) Jab, Jab.

I'll bet he can't build a portable fuel cell to power his Mac for under $20. :P

That's easy.. since you didn't specify the type of fuel cell, this could well be a large battery. If you want to offer a challenge, be more specific, like a portable hydrogen fuel cell to power his mac, or a portable nuclear power generator.. :)

Trouble with Transferring video

So. I am new to mac. I got a MacBook pro w/ Final Cut Express. How do I transfer my tapes to my Final Cut? I think I may be missing a special connection wire or something? But I don't know.

First, it is good to have an external hard drive plugged in to do your scratchwork and rendering from.

Does the camera have a USB or Firewire port on it? If so, you need a cable to connect the camera to the computer.
If not, I would suggest a video capture device. I am sure the camera has video in/out plugs on it. There are a number of them available for your Pro.

Keep in mind that you will probably be transferring the video at 1X speed so it will take a little while.
