:( Hardware related issues.

I am a 15 year old aspiring filmaker on exchange in Japan. Upon coming here my host family's laptop cannot run Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0, doesn't have a FireWire port, and I'm not sure it can handle my Canon HV20's HD footage.

What is some freeware video editing software you recommend? Is there such thing as a FireWire hub that connects to USB?

Please help.

Firewire and USB are completely seperate technologies, so no there is no way to connect Firewire via a USB bus. However, you could get a firewire pcmcia card (or PC-Express, depending on what the laptop takes) Should be able to find one for $20 or less.

Why is it that the laptop won't run Premiere Elements? Is it strictly the firewire issue, or another reason?

As for the HDV footage from the HV20, if you can get elements to run you can edit with proxy files and then replace those with the full quality files for your render. This is actually not a bad process to follow regardless of the power of the computer you're working with, simply because it will be much faster to work with.
