Hard drives for editing

Hi guys, I have a laptop with no hard drive. i need to buy one. However I am wondering what type of hard drive will be best for editing my movie on. I need a lot of storage space, does it matter if it is internal or external? what would be my options?

Generally I've been told to keep my footage on a different hard drive to my operating system and software installs. This would mean you need to buy two hard drives. External would need to be powered (yes there are portable non powered ones but for video eiditng you're probably better of getting a powered one)

I swear by Glyph drives. It is the only drive that has NEVER crashed on my. I have one Glyph that is on 12 or more hours a day and has been for almost ten years now. They are a little pricier than most, but they are very quiet, something very important to an audio guy like me!!! Two (2) terrabytes is about $225. And Pro Tools loves the Oxford 924 chip.

BTW, I have a boot-up/software drive, I have another internal drive just for video playback (the video is deleted when the project is completed, a copy is on the archive drive), and I do my audio post work on a project specific external (Glyph) drive.

I have G-Drives for current work drives (OS and software on internal drives) and a huge WD drive for storage - everything is on the work drives til completed and then they get moved off.

I also have a RAID cage with two drive slots for on-set data wrangling, but I haven't employed one for post as I don't do heaps of post stuff anymore.
