Hello, I am taking a web distribution class and have to write a paper about H.264, and I am a beginner when it comes to compression and web distribution. Just wanted to see if any of you guys had some good knowledge on H.264 and why its pretty much the preferred compression used. What are your experiences with H.264? Any good sites to check out regarding H.264? thanks

H.264 is a CODEC which stands for COMPRESSOR/DECOMPRESSOR. A CODEC is like the software that translates a string of stills into a moving picture by utilizing shared pixels between frames or by blending pixels within each frame.
H.264 is the current most favored codec because it handles HD resolutions on sites like YouTube and VIMEO in a manageable, speedy manner by making the quality high, but the file sizes smaller than other codecs of similar material.
