Great Concept, Guidance needed.

My friends,
I seek some informed guidance in getting my project up and running.

It would be my intention to create a 'reality series' (intended fof TV) following 12 months in the life of my subjects,
starting business venture.

Although this kind of thing has been done many times before, I have a COMPLETLY new and UNQUIE
story to tell, I am very confident I would have all the ingrediants for a very successfull pitch in regards
ultimatly getting professional backing.

I figure, it to be 'unrealistic' to expect just to jump stright in and start filming the entire series,
but it is my initail idea to maybe create and shoot some type of 'pilot' which would accompany
my pitch and use this as a means to getting the backing / help I would need to complete the project.

Although I have had some exposure to film making and productions etc and would really value some
'start to finish' guidance on maybe the best way to proceed with this.

Is the 'pilot' idea a good one?
Can this all be done on a digital camera ?
Best way to pitch it, who to pitch it to?
Pre-Post production (home)
Simplest way ? (ie man and camera etc?)

ANY FEEDBACK WOULD BE GREATFULLY APPRICIATED.

Thank you

Although Iam not into TV series production here my 2 cent.

The pilot seems a good idea, if you can make it in good quality. Digital cameras (HD) should be standard in european TV production. Something like a FX1 should be enough, lots of docs are shot on such equipment. Pre- and postproduction; if you dont have the money you shurly have to make it at home. But be shure that to be accepted as production company you need to get nice graphicdesign and animations. Simplest way; that depends on what you are shoting. Two cameras might be needed as well as a director/editor. Such reality stile series produce an imense amount of footage. To edit it out of the blue is nearly impossible or better said needs to much time. You either need a good shot script which tells you where to look for what part of the story or better a director/editor who is present while filming and gets to know the story himself and afterwords can edit it.

Who to pitch it to? - I would say it depends on your goal. If you want to be the producer you may talk to TV stations. As you have no experience the pilot may get you some small deal for the show at a small or new station. There are also media conventions that only deal with tv content, but to copyright an idea is difficult and thats why I think it might be dangerous to go there.
An interessting approach might be to try to sell your concept to big production companies.

Thanks for your input...

So your also saying that it could be possible on approaching a production company
with just a pitch alone ?

Yes, with a concept. You need to have invested enough that they see a profit in getting you on board. As I said, you cant copyright an idea so it is more secure to have something more than just an idea. To have the people to be shown under contract would be nice (if they are something special).
It is more likly that they invest in YOU (you get money/job) when it seems they only have to support and finance the thing, than it would be easy for them. If they have to plan and do everything from the beginning your idea might be ignored or maybe even stolen.

If you look at bigbrother (reality show in europe; some people living isolated from the world) anybody could have copied it, but it was easier to buy the whole show. The same is true to get into the business of creating such shows. If you would have the budget to develope the whole show you could act as a production company yourself and sell it to tv-stations.
