Can someone suggest a references for me to copy? Yes, I mean it.
I'd like to replicate a shot that was done by professional cinematographer in filmy and Hollywood style. But, please, don't suggest those shots that require a lot of money.
Seriously though. One of my favorite films is "Serendipity" with John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale. The lighting is wonderfully moody through much of the film and some of the night time shots are absolutely beautiful.
Since you don't have access to expensive toys you should use what you have and attempt to recreate shots on a low/micro budget. Your biggest problem is that you will not be able to recreate locations.
In my previous life as a musician I could easily play something by buying the sheet music. The next step was recreating sounds and building arrangements, something a lot easier to do when everything is "virtual"; you'll have to do the best you can in the real world. I would suggest (from my micro-miniscule knowledge of visuals) starting with still photographs.
I'd say look at this year's cinematography winner, Inception, and see what corners you can cut to get the same sort of results as Pfister. Then work your way back through the years seeing how you can achieve the effects of Slumdog Millionaire, There Will Be Blood, The Hurt Locker...etc in order to get the same cinematic stylings but without the equipment.
I think trying to replicate people is a great way to learn and through doing it you're bound to develop your own style, whether it's simply through seeing what works and what doesn't.
