From one rookie looking for advice

Hey, how's it going?

Going to be honest, I have no idea what to write on these things so i'm writing the first things that come to mind.

I'm mike and with a few of my friends we've started a YouTube channel for original comedy sketches and spoofs. We have ideas, scripts, storyboards and actors but no equipment and no idea how to go about filming.

I know it sounds a little like a lost cause but we're passionate about making people laugh and we think we've stumbled on a good idea. We just need to know what to do.

Any help means the world to us. Thanks.

Mike

Can you not get a hold of any filming/sound equipment what so ever?

Have you done anything to do with film at all? Like school/college/university or just general video-age?

I did a media course at college so i know how to film and edit. I've done dub-overs for trailers and I'm also learning how to use after effects.

Normally we'd get equipment form our college but it's shut for the summer now. so I'm tasked with finding some place else to get equipment during the summer. I know what's needed and what not. What i really want to know is if it's beneficial that once you've got a idea to run it by a focus group to see if your idea could attract an audience

Have you looked to see if anyone else has done something similar? Chances are they probably have. Focus groups aren't very helpful unless you've got a big budget, frankly I wouldn't waste money on them.

You could always try a kickstarter if you have a realistic budget plan in mind and some inkling of who your target audience might be. The hard part is figuring out where to advertise.

I personally think it would be best if you got a hold of a camera and done the sketches to see what works & what doesn't in your eyes. Kind of like a pilot.

I read something that Stephen Merchant said,

"There’s a quote that is, “I can't give you a sure-fire formula for success, but I can give you a formula for failure: try to please everybody all the time.” You’ll never know what everyone wants and you’re more likely to do something that’s of no worth if you try and please everyone, whereas if you try and please yourself and like-minded people, more people will appreciate it. "

I heard a similar saying years ago and I follow that motto.
