Free Storyboard Software

Hey I am not an artist. I am a perfectionist though, and I would love to know of a storyboard free-ware that I can download and help me storyboard my films. I don't care about hiring someone to create hundreds of little masterpieces. I am looking for glorified stick figures w/ camera directions and angle notes etc.

Anyone know of anything either free or on the cheap?

Thanks!

There is no "good" storyboarding software that I've found that is what I would like and is "free". All of the decent stuff costs money (usually in excess of $200), and the really usable stuff is very expensive.

My definition of "good" would be a 3-D -like or -ish software program that has some ability to have different people (even just a few male and female characters and maybe a few children, etc.) in different posable positions that give decent coverage of standard human movement with some coloring options and background and scene features and functionality. Even if it had a simple drawn look, or graphics look, that would be fine. (I'd probably even settle for a decent stick figure graphics ability) I just want my storyboards to not look bad, and I don't think that's too much to ask.

I'm a programmer, and I've thought about making my own, but it's not easy to do, and would be a pretty big project. I keep hoping that some bright programmer with a lot of free time on his/her hands will create a freeware or open source storyboarding software program.

Moviestorm is cool, but is overkill, unless you want to learn it and mess with it. You can make simplistic 'complex' animated movies with it. So that can be fun in and of itself. You could do your whole movie in it, including shots and all, just to see what it would look like. Theoretically, that would make your actual filming very easy when the time comes. It partly depends on what is going on in your film, though. Basically you would be creating an animatic of your film. It would definitely take some time, though.

Google SketchUp is really nice, once you learn how to use it. I don't know if I would use it for storyboarding, but you could. Kind of. It's good for slapping together quick 3-D images. And if you get good at it, you can make some cool stuff.

Springboard is kind of cool, although I've never used it. It is basically a graphics program that has some storyboarding tools and features. So, unless you are a decent artist, your storyboards are not going to look very good (as you can see by their example screenshot), but they will probably be better than nothing, or perhaps even better than hand drawn. I'm going to download this one and try it out just to see what it's like. It's not actually completely free: "Registration : Springboard is free and useful for small projects. The free version places watermarks on images, has some printing and export limitations, and expires four months after the release date (a new free version will always be available)."

StoryboardPro looks like it is non-graphic as far as I can tell:

Storyboard Tools looks interesting. I'm going to look at this one, too. But it is limited unless you are an artist.

Directors Boards is very simple: http://homepage.mac.com/directors_notebook/downloadboards.html

Storyboard Quick costs $300: http://www.storyboardquick.com/quick.html

Celtx (kell-tix) is an "all-in-one" product that has a storyboard organizer feature with some enhanced functionality, but you have to import your storyboard images into it. It is fairly powerful overall. And is open source freeware, which is cool. I always try to use OSfw when I can. (for Windows) I will download this and try it, even though its storyboard functionality is limited. You should check this out just in case it is for you. It is feature rich and very powerful. Go through the video walk through to get a good idea of what it can do.
"Celtx is the world's first all-in-one media pre-production software. It has everything you need to take your story from concept to production. Celtx replaces 'paper, pen & binder' pre-production with a digital approach that's more complete, simpler to work with, and easier to share."

I haven't looked at Xtranormal, so I don't know much about it: http://www.xtranormal.com/

FrameForge 3D Studio is expensive: ($400 to $600 plus addon packs) http://www.frameforge3d.com/

You can also look for cartooning software and comic / comic book software. And animation software.

Most cost money. Look at:

Toon Boom Studio: All-In-One Animation Software : http://www.toonboom.com/products/toonBoomStudio/
Toon Boom Storyboard: http://www.toonboom.com/products/storyboard/

Toon Doo: http://www.toondoo.com/

Stickman: 1-2-3 Cartoon Animation Software : interesting: http://www.cutoutpro.com/

I figure these have more to do with market research or checking positioning.

What to know if PRODUCT XYZ is getting mind space in a specific market. Go to social networking sites and ask how to solve the problem PRODUCT XYZ solves. You hope that people say, oh i used "Product XYZ" to fix that..
