Focus during action sequences

I'm sure this is a newbie question, hence why I ask it here! What steps can be taken to ensure camera focus is kept during an action sequence (chase sequence between two characters on foot). There will be a lot of movement in the sequence and I would like to make sure it can be shot as clearly as possible (of course!).
