First film

So i'm looking into making my first short film, or first anything ive done to do with film really, and id like to ask some questions and get some tips from you guys, since the only training i have is from watching films.
Would it be wise to write my own screenplay for my first time, base it off something else like a remake?
Is it possible to make a quality film only using one camera?
tips would be very much appreciated since i know next to nothing about film making.

My advice would be to take, oh, three or four months and read as many threads on this forum as you can before your eyes fall out of your head. Then you'll have a much better idea about what questions you should be asking.

Good luck!

Just to answer your 2 questions,
I would say it would not be wise to make your first short basing it off of something else already made. Maybe making fun of another film, that'd be good. Or making your own episode of some series, but not in a serious manner. Shorts should be something original.
And yes! It is very possible to make a quality film with one camera! That's how my friend and I make videos. We've been using just one camera for our videos for years now.
But take Adeimantus' advice and read around. There's so much more to filmmaking than most people think.
