exporting DSLR footage after editing.

Hello,
So I have been shooting some footage with my t2i such as an interview I did with Kevin Smith last month as well as some footage I shot down in Alabama while visiting a friend. Now the footage itself looks amazing both sets of footage. When I edit it. (I use both Avid and Premiere CS5) it still looks amazing however when I export it to a file that I can upload to youtube or vimeo it always winds up looking like crap regardless of how high the settings look so I must be doing something wrong. Does anyone have any experience with this?

I dunno, man. I'm using CS5, and when I export to h.264, 1080p, the file-size is manageable enough to upload to vimeo/youtube, yet it still looks quite nice.

What are the particulars? Like, what are your settings on the project, and probably more importantly, what are your settings while exporting?
