EX vs EF in Canon

Anybody know what the difference is between an EX mount and an EF mount for canon? Are they the same thing? I'm considering purchasing a used Sigma 24-70mm f2.8, and they're all EX. Also the cheaper used EX versions look different from the New EX versions. If anybody knows anything I should consider before a purchase, please let me know.
Best,
Aveek

I have three Sigma lenses for my Canon 6D and they're all EX range.

I think it's more a marketing term that denotes a higher-end Sigma range.

The EX range has variants for Canon, Nikon, Sigma etc cameras.

When I bought my EX lens, I always bought the EX for CANON (in my case also full sensor, not cropped) models.

Sigma do not have an EF lens range. Canon has the EF range.

Canon EF lens mount
Introduced in 1987, the EF lens mount is the standard lens mount on the Canon EOS family of SLR film and digital cameras. EF stands for "Electro-Focus"

Top range Canon EF lenses are designated "L-series", or "Luxury" lenses.

Thank you so much for that. Truly appreciate it.

I'm getting a couple of used Sigma EX for canon. According to the seller, its for a full sensor, but is there any way to tell? These look like pretty old lenses, so I'm thinking they must be for the full sensor. Am I off?

ps. I'm buying online so can't do a physical check.

I don't know. I don't actually think so.

Best I can do is include some links to the Sigma EX lens that I bought for my Canon 6D. You can zoom into the photos, check the specs etc. All were clearly labelled 'FOR CANON' on the website but not on the lens themselves...

Did he say which Canon mount they fit? Canon had many lens mounts and "older" lenses my have the FD mount which would be useless on any modern Canon camera or EF mount cinema cam. You can have him send you the model and the serial numbers. The lens will have either a DC or DX in the model number. DC is for crop sensor camera (even though they will still mount on FF) and DX is for full frame. If you check with Sigma, they can tell you exactly what they fit.
