European money

hey all

I hold two passports (British and Italian) and I am actively looking into film funding opportunities in Europe.

I am currently based in the US and have been for a while.

How would one go about getting that sweet European cash ??

So when writing a project is it wise to start thinking of a setting that can help with financing.
At what point would you get a producer involved? Should the producer be from the country
Most funds in Europe require you to spend that money in the EU or a certain country in the EU.

It can't hurt. There is no "one-size-fits-all" answer. Since YOU are looking
for EU funding and you know that the movie must be shot in Europe then
for your script it seems wise.

Some writers get a producer involved after the script is finished. Some
writers work with a producer as they develop the script. It depends.
If you know you will shoot in ONE country it won't hurt to work with a
producer from that country. But its not necessary. It might be wiser to
work with a producer with specific skills over one from a specific country.

Gotcha.
What's the deal with co-productions? As in, how do they work?
And how would one go about connecting with a producer? Via festival Labs?
Finally, how do production companies fit into the picture? Would a European producer take a script to a production company, who then gets access to funds?

A co-production is when two (or more) production companies work
together to make a movie. Usually this happens when different prodCo's
have access to different aspects – say, one has access to funding and
another has access to specific talent.

There are many different ways for a writer/director to connect with
a producer. Call them, e-mail them, work as a PA, film schools, film
festivals.

In general a production company is the company that puts together
a project. Not every indie project is made by a production company
– some are made by an individual. A European producer might take
script to a production company. A European producer might have
their own production company. In general the producer (or executive
producer) gets access to the funds. But there are many different options.
