editing Editing technique?

Hey everyone. My group is looking to create an acapella video that has the similar video direction style as this video:

I feel like I know how I could edit the boxes like that in After Effects but I wanted to see what others thought. Please let me know your opinions on how this could be done. Programs I use are Sony Vegas and After Effects.

You can do it in either program. In Vegas, you would use cropping, and multiple layers of video.

Exactly what the CF said, you can do it in most any good NLE .........and add a image layer on top for the white bars

exactly... multiple layers... which is similar to pic in pic in other programs... but some programs cant do more than just a few channels or layers... so make sure you can do more than 3 or 4 layers to get that effect...

If I'm not wrong, they changed the background color to white, right?
