I'm a passionate DOP and editor. I've been making films since I got my first dv camera back in the late 90s. I started out just writing and developing my skills by trial and error.
It took me a long time to figure out Adobe Premiere pro but it was the first editing program I got back with my dv camera. Then just in the past year I've jump head first into After Effects which I'm starting to love more and more. With the amount of info available to inspiring filmmakers online I think anything is possible for us with a little hard work and dedication. Film school is almost obsolete at this point.
